Spam Musubi

With this easy recipe, you can make Spam Musubi yourself at home!

I also made a kid-friendly version of Spam Musubi for my daughter’s lunchbox today. Oh, she really loves sushi. 🥰

What is Spam

Spam is canned meat made mostly with ham. When I lived in the Philippines, we had Spam all the time. We had it for breakfast with fried eggs and rice and also for dinner.

But I am now living here in Denmark, and the nearest canned meat I can find to replace Spam is the Luncheon meat. I bought it from the Asian store here in Esbjerg.

It would help if you usually had a Musubi mold, but I don’t have one, so I made my technique and procedure to achieve this sushi’s rectangular shape. After assembling the sushi, I wrapped them with plastic film to makes sure they hold their shape.

You will need:

  • 1 can Spam or Luncheon meat
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • Nori sushi sheets
  • cooked sushi rice

Procedure (video):

  1. Slice the Spam or luncheon meat into about 8 slices, depending on how thick you like it. Place them on a plate.
  2. Mix soy sauce, oyster sauce, and sugar until sugar is dissolved.
  3. Pour the soya mixture on the plate with spam or luncheon meat. Let sit for about 15 minutes.
  4. Fry Spam or luncheon meat on each side over medium heat until slightly crispy or until the desired doneness.
  5. Place a plastic film and a strip of nori (shiny side down) on a cutting board or clean surface. Place your Musubi mold (if you have) or don’t place your sushi rice on a rectangular plate, drizzle some sesame seeds and some cooked soya mixture, flatten it, and divide into 8 portions (see my video).
  6. Add sushi rice, add some of the cooked spam to the top, then add another sushi rice, if desired. Wrap up one side of the nori and stick it to the Spam or sushi rice top. Because I don’t have a Musubi molder, I used plastic film to keep their shape.
  7. Serve warm or cold, and you can also dip it in soy sauce or ketchup.
