Homemade Fish Balls

Fish balls are popular street food in the Philippines, and fish ball vendors can be found everywhere, but mostly they can be seen outside school campuses. This dish is really popular among students because they are so cheap and quick to cook.

Fish balls remind me of my high school and college days in the Philippines. I used to eat this with my friends and classmates after school while waiting for our school service. I miss the Philippines, my friends, and the smell of these fish balls. 😃

Today I’m going to show you how I make my own version of homemade fish balls. This is also perfect for your kids’ lunchbox.

If you have tried this recipe or any other recipe on my blog, please don’t forget to rate the recipe and let me know how you got on in the comments below. I love hearing from you! You can also follow me on PinterestInstagramFacebook, and YouTube to see what I am getting up to.

You will need:

  • 400 – 500 grams finely chopped fish
  • 1 cup cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup plain flour
  • 1 tsp fine salt
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 3 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp onion powder
  • 2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp ground black pepper
  • 100 ml of water
  • 1 egg
  • oil, for frying

  1. In a bowl, combine all the dry ingredients and mix.
  2. Add the finely chopped fish: egg, and water. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are fully incorporated.
  3. Cover the bowl and refrigerate the mixture in the fridge overnight until it becomes firm and sticky.
  4. Heat the oil in a large skillet or pan.
  5. Dip a spoon in a glass of water and scoop some fishball mixture and make a ball in your palm with the spoon’s help.
  6. Deep fry the first batch of fish balls on low heat until the color turns light brown. Repeat the process until all the fish balls have been cooked.
  7. Drain on paper towels and serve immediately with the sauce of your choice.

Wait, how do you make the sauce? Well, let’s just say that I will come up with another post soon. Stay tuned! 😉
